Back in the days before he married my mother in law my father in law used to own a Sunbeam motorcycle of twenties vintage. He really enjoyed that old bike back in the days when young guys could usually not afford a motor car. As young single men do my father in law wanted to impress a girl on a date and being quite charming he managed to persuade a young lady to come out on a date with him on his Sunbeam motorcycle.

Nat King Cole sings this song below His twenties vintage Sunbeam motorcycle had a bit of an embarrassing habit of occasionally catching fire. So the fire of romance was quickly extinguished as my father in law labored to put out the engine fire. He found that he needed to find a new girlfriend, and a new motorcycle that did not have incendiary propensities. Marston made bicycles and motorcycles of the highest quality and his attention to detail in making sure his products would literally last a lifetime was exemplary.

Marston used his Japanning expertise in finishing his bicycles and motorcycles rather than just painting them. Japanning referred to techniques of creating a hard black coating on an object. This is the finish on genuine Japanese sword saya scabbards and on Japanese lacquerware. However, urushi lacquer is a toxic substance typically causing contact dermatitis until it is completely dry. So in Europe other methods were developed to create the same sort of hard black finish.

This Sunbeam looks to be complete and original but it will require a complete stripping down and restoration.

Sunbeam Cycles is most famous for its S7 balloon-tyred shaft-drive motorcycle with an overhead valve in-line twin engine. In , aged 15, he was sent to Wolverhampton to be apprenticed to Edward Perry as a japanware manufacturer.

At the age of 23 he left and set up his own japanning business making any and every sort of domestic article. He did so well that when Perry died in Marston bought Perry’s business and amalgamated it with his own.

At the end of his apprenticeship in he purchased a japanning business at Bilston from Daniel Smith Lester. This venture proved to be a great success, so much so that two years after Edward Perry’s death in , John purchased Jeddo Works and returned to business life in Wolverhampton. All kinds of domestic products were produced and the company became one of the two largest makers of black enamelled ware in the country.

John was a keen cyclist and became interested in trying to improve the machines of the day. Around he constructed a rather crude and heavy bicycle with solid tyres. At the time, William Newill, the works foreman, built a much improved machine for his boss, with a special low frame because John Marston had short legs. The cycle had been finished in the usual japanning colours of black and gold leaf, and to the same high standard as Marston products of the time.

The story is told that John’s wife, Ellen saw the sun reflected in the high gloss finish, and so the bicycle became known as ‘The Sunbeam’, the name being registered in John was so pleased with the cycle that he decided to manufacture them and gave William Newill a partnership in the new venture. There were 13 bicycles and tricycles on display at the company’s stand, including a ladies tricycle and a safety bicycle that included the first part to be patented by Sunbeam; an eccentric crank bracket for adjusting the chain.

This lovely old bicycle was brought into the workshop for me to make it ridable. Even simple things like replacing a tyre are a headache on the Sunbeam compared to other bicycles. The picture shows the bike after I had done some work to it. The front dynohub needed setting up correctly and the wheel refitted. I then had to refit the unusual, and obsolete, brake blocks.

The rear wheel had no tyre or tube so these needed fitting. Removing the rear wheel is a real pain so I fitted them with the wheel still in the bicycle. Before fitting the tyre I tightened the mudguard bolts. These were difficult to get to, but would have been impossible to reach with the tyre in place. The front brake already worked but I made a small adjustment to make it work a little better.

The brake works satisfactory using gravity as a return spring. I will ask the customer if he wants me to try to find a suitable replacement spring. The rear brake was seized with very little movement. WD40 and a lot of part wiggling sorted it out.

Grace’s Guide is the leading source of historical information on industry and manufacturing in Britain. This web publication contains , pages of information and , images on early companies, their products and the people who designed and built them. This early type of bicycle had its wheels side-by-side, instead of one wheel behind the other as later became the standard. When the designer, Edward Carl Fredrich Otto , was negotiating with BSA for the manufacture of the “Otto,” being anxious to prove that his machine was correct in design and principle, he demonstrated his invention to the Directors by mounting the machine on the large table, riding it backwards and forwards, showing the method of balancing, and explaining the details of the somewhat complicated system of steering.

He then mounted the machine in the Board Room, rode it down the stairs, and so out into the roadway. This performance evidently satisfied the management, as the manufacture of the machine was then taken over and continued during the years to In October, , the B.
